Procedure
Respond to engine protection system activation due to overheating
1. Idle the engine in neutral and check the cooling system indicator for water flow. 2. If water is flowing from the cooling system indicator, continue idling for 30 seconds. 3. Confirm the overheat indicator turns off within 30 seconds and that the engine responds normally to throttle control lever operation. 4. If no water is flowing from the cooling system indicator, stop the engine and check the discharge port first. WARNING: Do not continue operating the engine if there is no cooling water flow — engine damage may result. 5. Tilt the outboard motor and inspect the water intake screens for clogs. 6. If the water intake screens are clogged, clean them. 7. Return the outboard motor to the running position, restart the engine, and check the cooling system indicator again. 8. If there is still no water flowing from the cooling system indicator, or if the engine protection system remains activated after 30 seconds, return to the nearest boat landing and have the outboard motor inspected by an authorized Honda Marine dealer. WARNING: Do not continue operating the engine under these conditions.
