Outboard Installation – Fastening the Outboard to the Transom

1. Use a dial torque wrench to determine transom strength. Tighten the mounting bolt or nut while monitoring the dial reading. 2. If the bolt or nut continues to turn without the torque reading on the dial increasing, this indicates the transom is yielding. Increase the load area by using a larger washer (a) or a transom reinforcement plate (b). WARNING: A yielding transom may not provide adequate outboard support. Do not proceed without addressing transom integrity. 3. Verify the transom mounting surface is flat within 3.17 mm (0.125 in.). No step in the transom mounting surface is allowed. WARNING: A step or gap between the transom clamp and the boat transom is not allowed. 4. Verify the inside transom mounting bolt washer surface is flat within 3.17 mm (0.125 in.).
