Procedure · 1. Drain and refill the gearcase lubricant (refer to Gearcase Lubrication).
Diagnostic · Cause: Abnormal gear wear inside gearcase Test: Examine drained lubricant for metal particle size and quantity; a small amount is normal, excessive amount or large chips indicates abnormal wear
Procedure · 1. Place the outboard in a vertical operating position.
Diagnostic · Cause: Gearcase seal or component failure allowing water ingress Test: Visually inspect drained lubricant for water separation or milky discoloration
