Procedure
Checking Boat Transom Construction
1. Determine the strength of the boat transom. The outboard mounting locknuts and bolts must be able to hold 75 Nm (55 lb‑ft) of torque without the boat transom yielding or cracking. (torque: 75 Nm) WARNING: If the boat transom yields or cracks under this torque, the construction of the transom may not be adequate. The transom must be strengthened or the load carrying area increased. 2. Use a dial torque wrench to apply torque to the mounting bolt/nut and monitor the dial reading. If the bolt or nut continues to turn without the torque reading on the dial increasing, this indicates the transom is yielding. 3. If the transom is yielding, increase the load area by using a larger washer (large transom washer) or a transom reinforcement plate. Tools: Dial torque wrench, Large transom washer, Transom reinforcement plate
