Engine Start and Warm-Up Procedure

1. Turn the ignition switch key to the START position to crank the engine. WARNING: Do not operate the starter for more than 5 seconds at a time — this will overheat and damage the starter motor. Do NOT turn the key to START while the engine is already running, as this can damage the starter motor and flywheel. 2. If the engine fails to start within 5 seconds, release the key and wait at least 10 seconds before attempting to start again. 3. Once the engine is running, allow it to warm up before getting underway. Above 41°F (5°C): warm up for 2–3 minutes. Below 41°F (5°C): warm up for at least 10 minutes at approximately 2,000 rpm. WARNING: If the engine is not properly warmed up before raising engine speed, the buzzer and overheat indicator may activate and engine speed will be automatically reduced. Cruising at high speed without warming up may cause engine damage. 4. To achieve ~2,000 rpm for cold-weather warm-up: push the fast idle button, then move the control lever to forward or reverse to open the throttle to approximately 2,000 rpm.
