Maintenance Inspection Before Operation

1. Check the engine oil level (p. 89). WARNING: Running the engine with a low oil level can cause engine damage. Overfilling the engine can cause it to smoke or have oil leaks, which can also cause engine damage. 2. Check that the propeller is undamaged and the castle nut is secured with the cotter pin (p. 105). 3. Check that the anodes are securely attached to the stern bracket and the gear case (p. 104) and are not excessively worn. Anodes help protect the outboard motor from corrosion. 4. Make sure the tool kit is onboard (p. 84). Replace any missing items. 5. Check the fuel level in the fuel tank (p. 99). 6. Check that the battery fluid is between the upper and lower levels, and that the battery leads are connected securely. 7. Check the fuel filter for water or sediment accumulation (p. 101).
