Determine and Set Outboard Mounting Height

1. Use the mounting height chart (diagram 47710) to determine recommended mounting height based on anticipated maximum boat speed (MPH). The solid reference line (a) is the primary recommendation. 2. For dual outboard installations, use reference line (d) from the chart to determine mounting height. 3. If maximum speed is the only objective, use reference line (c) from the chart. 4. For XL models, add 12.7 cm (5 in.) to the mounting height values listed in the chart. 5. Verify the selected mounting height does not exceed the model maximum: 63.5 cm (25 in.) for L models, 76 cm (30 in.) for XL models. Exceeding these limits may cause gearcase component damage. WARNING: Mounting the outboard higher than the specified maximum may cause damage to the gearcase components. 6. If mounting height exceeds 56.0 cm (22 in.), select a propeller designed for surfacing operation. 7. After installation, run the engine at idle speed and confirm the exhaust relief hole is at least 25.4 mm (1 in.) above the waterline to prevent exhaust restrictions and poor idle performance. WARNING: Exhaust relief hole below the waterline at idle will cause exhaust restrictions and poor performance at idle.
