Draining Gearcase Lubricant
1. Tilt the outboard so that the oil drain plug is at the lowest point. 2. Place the drain pan below the outboard. 3. Remove the vent plug (a) and fill/drain plug (b) and drain lubricant.

Diagnostic · Cause: Gearcase seal failure allowing water ingress Test: Visually inspect drained lubricant for water separation or milky appearance
Spec · Mercury/Quicksilver gear oil or API GL5, SAE #80 to #90, approximately 195 mL (6.6 fl oz)
Procedure · 1. Drain and refill the gearcase lubricant. Refer to Gearcase Lubrication section for details.
Diagnostic · Cause: Abnormal gear wear Test: Examine drained gearcase lubricant for metal particles; small amounts indicate normal wear, excessive amounts or chips indicate abnormal wear
