Diagnostic · Cause: Gearcase seal failure allowing water ingress Test: Visually inspect drained lubricant for water separation or milky appearance
Spec · Mercury or Quicksilver gear oil, or API GL-5: SAE #80 to #90 conditions={"standard":"API GL-5","viscosity":"SAE #80 to #90"}
Procedure · 1. Tilt the outboard so that the oil drain plug is at the lowest point. 2. Place the drain pan below the outboard. 3. Remove the vent plug (a) and fill/drain plug (b) and drain lubricant.
Diagnostic · Cause: Abnormal gear wear Test: Examine drained gearcase lubricant for metal particles; small amounts indicate normal wear, excessive amounts or chips indicate abnormal wear
