Engine Break-In Procedure

1. Run the engine at trolling speed for the first 15 minutes. Use the minimum throttle opening necessary to operate the boat at a safe trolling speed. WARNING: Avoid continuous operation at a steady speed throughout the entire break-in period. 2. For the next 45 minutes, run the engine up to a maximum of 2,000–3,000 rpm (approximately 10%–30% of maximum throttle opening). Limit operation at maximum 2,000–3,000 rpm to no more than 50% of this 45-minute phase. 3. For the next 60 minutes, run the engine up to a maximum of 4,000–5,000 rpm (approximately 50%–80% of maximum throttle opening). Limit operation at maximum 4,000–5,000 rpm to no more than 50% of this 60-minute phase. 30-second full-throttle bursts are permitted, but do not operate continuously at full throttle. WARNING: Do not operate the engine continuously at full throttle during this phase. 4. For boats that plane easily, bring the boat up on plane and then reduce the throttle opening to the recommended rpm range. 5. For the remaining 8 hours, do not run the engine at full throttle for more than 5 minutes at a time. WARNING: Never run the engine in a closed or partly closed area. Exhaust contains poisonous carbon monoxide gas that can build up to dangerous levels.
